The KP switch slap

June 18th, 2008 · Comments

For those of you who might have missed Kevin Pietersen’s cheeky batting display during his 110 knock against New Zealand on Sunday, check out the clip above. He actually switches from a right-handed to a goofy stance while Scott Styris’ delivery is still in flight. Of course, Styris is better known as professional pork pie than bowler of substance, so KP likely had ample time to switch bats while he was at it. Or tag in another batsman. But I doubt they’d allow that – although I can hardly see such a situation being covered in the rules.

The display generated a fair bit of hubbub in cricketing circles about whether or not “switch-hitting” was consistent with the spirit of the game, but the MCC officially put the issue to bed yesterday by announcing that they thought it was quite smashing what-ho.

“MCC believes that the ’switch-hit’ stroke is exciting for the game of cricket,” a statement said. “Indeed, the stroke conforms to the laws of cricket and will not be legislated against.”

The MCC, which acts as the custodian of cricket’s laws, was asked by the International Cricket Council to discuss Pietersen’s revolutionary tactics at a meeting on Tuesday.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the little prick will give this shit a go against South Africa in the coming series. I’d love to see him somehow lose a leg or an eyeball to these histrionics. Maybe toss up a grenade or a cluster bomb for him to clobber. How about them apples, MCC?

Good shot or not, he’s still a total cock.
